California Chaparral & Woodlands ecoregion is 1 of only 5 Mediterranean shrublands and woodlands of its kind, which together support 20 percent of the plant species on Earth - and a variety of birds and insects.
The Tule Elk is a smaller & lighter subspecies of N. American Elk that occurs only in California. Vast numbers thrived in the grasslands of central & coastal California. With the 1800's gold rush, uncontrolled hunting & rapid agricultural development drove them nearly to extinction (almost single digits)!
