Hundreds of thousands of northern elephant seals once inhabited the Pacific. They were slaughtered nearly to extinction in the 1800s for their blubber (to make oil). After getting protection from Mexico and then the US, they have recovered from the only remaining colony on the Guadalupe Island off the Baja California coast.

Traveling up to 21,000 miles a year, it is the longest migration for any mammal (from their breeding colonies in Mexico and California to Alaska or the north Pacific Ocean to feed and then return to their breeding colonies). It is the only mammal to make 2 long distance migrations a year.
